21/11/2007 - Farming Family of the Year

House of Commons

House of Commons

It’s official we are the Farming Family of the year!

The award was presented by Farm business and Farm Life magazines and sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers and given at a prestigious ceremony of leading food and farming figures at the House of Commons on Friday the 16th November.

Since Andrew and Hilary Julian moved their family onto the island 20 years ago, they have established one of the country’s leading fresh flower businesses.

More than 75,000 presentation boxes of narcissi are posted from the island every year to destinations across the country.

“What so impressed the judges about the Julian family was how they have built up such a thriving and important business over such a short time,” says Farm Business editor Cedric Porter.

“As well involving members of the family, the business also employs 20 people which is very significant in a community the size of St Martins. The company has also successfully highlighted that its flowers are very environmentally sound being grown in a climate that allows them to flourish outside and not having to be flown thousands of miles to shops.

“Family farms are the backbone of British farming and families such as the Julians who can identify a market, supply it well and focus on marketing have a very strong future ahead of them.”

The Farm Business Food and Farming Industry Awards are now in their fifth year. They are Britain’s leading national food and farming business awards, celebrating excellence in all parts of the food and farming industry.

Farm Business magazine has established itself as the leading pioneering and professional farming magazine. It firmly believes in a strong future for British farming and seeks to identify solutions to challenges the industry faces, while highlighting the growing number of opportunities. Its sister magazine Farm Life highlights farms that are rejuvenating the countryside through commitment to quality, welfare and the environment. It also gives help and advice on setting up new farming and other countryside enterprises.

The Farming Family of the year Award was sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers. It is the UK’s largest farmer-owned agricultural supply co-op. Through its depots, stores and website its sells tens of thousands of products to hundreds of thousands of customer every year. In its South west stores it is having great success selling local produce under the regional Taste of the West name.
