Carrying the gig up the beach

Carrying the gig up the beach

Churchtown Farm has sponsored the St Martin's ladies Gig rowing crews this summer - seemed the right thing to do seeing as half the crew members work at the farm!

Gigs are wooden boats about 32ft long and have crew of 6 plus a cox. Gig rowing is the main competitive sporting (and social) activity on the islands during the summer months. Gigs were originally built at the end of the 18th century to take the pilot out to the sailing ships. Whichever gig reached the anchored ship first received the money for the job. Now we just race for fun on a Wednesday night against crews from the other islands.

If you are ever on Scilly for the first May bank holiday you will be treated to the spectacular sight of over 100 gigs from all over the South West and further a field racing together in the Pilot Gig World Championships.
