The Old Glasshouse
Our latest building project is coming on apace. On December the 13th - just when we were really busy sending flowers for Christmas - good timing! The timber frame arrived for the new accommodation we are building over the winter.
For a long time, because of a shortage of housing on the island, some of our workforce who don't have their own houses on St Martin's have put up with an eclectic mixture of unusual and bizarre housing, including a converted barn that only made it on to mains electricity 3 years ago and two garden sheds! On the whole everybody has been very understanding of the situation and managed to enjoy the quirks of their slightly alternative accommodation.
Last year we given planning permission to demolish a redundant 1950's glasshouse and build a house with 6 large en-suite rooms.
The pace with which the timber frame building shot up was amazing and by early January, even with a week off for Christmas, the roof was on. Some of our longer-term team members have already bagged the best rooms and have been found searching the Internet for soft furnishings.
Although the new house is costing us a small fortune to build (roughly double the cost of building on the mainland!), we believe that it will more than pay for itself in happy staff! We hope very much that by providing first class accommodation, we will attract and keep a top quality team to make Churchtown Farm even stronger.
