18/09/2009 - Ben and Zoë’s Trip to Highgrove

In early September Ben and I were invited to Highgrove to celebrate the 40th anniversary of HRH Prince Charles being Chairman of the Prince’s Council. We were invited, as Churchtown Farm is a Duchy of Cornwall Farm, which makes Prince Charles our Landlord.
The highlight of the visit was an informal tour of the gardens where we able to wander around at our own pace through the extensive ground and enjoy the many parts of the garden that, although very different, seemed to fit together and complement each other very well.
I have to confess to not being a great gardening buff. I think it might be because we spend so much of our time growing things at work it isn’t top of the priority list at home. I did have quite a preconceived idea, not based on any great research, that the gardens would be quite formal but this was certainly not the case, they were absolutely beautiful and not overly fussy.
There was so much to see from the kitchen garden that was, in early September, bursting with fruit and veg, to the avenue of softly topiaried bushes leading to the house that had rather a marshmallow quality to them and my absolute favourite the Carpet Garden. A small walled garden designed in North African style with a beautiful bright blue geometric fountain at its centre.
After the garden tour we enjoyed lunch, after which Prince Charles and Prince William met with the Duchy tenants. The visit finished with a humorous but heartfelt speech from Prince Charles in support of British Agriculture and the importance of family farms.
