Pink flush

Just like strawberry plants across the country, this year's crop of Scilly Island pinks is well ahead of schedule.

Pinks love the sun so April's excellent weather has caused such a flush amongst the scented blooms that all nine Scent from the Islands varieties are ready to send out to customers more than a month ahead of the usual date.

Orders are already flooding in to the family-run postal delivery service based on the off-island of St Martin's as customers take advantage of the early bumper crop of the quintessential English cottage garden flower, famous for its spicy fragrance.

Pinks are named not for their colour but the scalloped or pinked edge of their petals. Scent from the Islands blooms vary widely in colour - from purest white to deepest purple, with all shades of peach and pink in-between.

This year the company's owners, Ben and Zoe Julian, introduced a new variety of the flower to their crop, Bailey's Celebration, a striking dusky pink colour with deep raspberry stripes and, like all the other varieties, it's flourishing.

Zoe said: “Many things are a bit gloomy in the world at the moment so we hope our fabulous crop of scented show pinks will add a bit of colour and sweet fragrance. It's rare to have such an excellent crop so early and a great start to the season.”

Gift boxes of scented pinks start from just £9.50 and are available either by telephone on 01720 422169 or from the website www.scillyflowers.co.uk.
