Belladonna lilies from bud to beautiful flowers

In the Autumn, belladonna lilies appear in several fields close to our farm. Some of the fields have been purposely planted by us to make sure we have flowers to send when our scented pinks slow down at the end of the summer. Others are the fields of our neighbours, where the belladonnas come from old bulb stock that was planted many years ago when more flowers were sent to the wholesale markets.

The flowers have bare purple stems that suddenly appear through the grass and quickly grow to about 50cm. We pick them just as the bud breaks and the vibrant pink petals become visible. The flowers are sent very tight as they open up quickly and the delicate petals could get damaged in transit.
