Whale watching update
For the last few winters we have enjoyed watching out for some very impressive winter visitors to the islands. This year we have seen even more whale activity in December and January with the return of Pi - a humpbacked whale with a distinctive π shaped marking, and the sighting of other humpbacks and a few other species as well. The best place for whale spotting is the deep water to the north of St Martin's. Even when whales come quite close to the cliffs it is pretty hard to take a good photo that shows more than a dark blob in a grey sea but with the help of drones some keen local photographers have had quite a bit of success. This beautiful image of Pi was taken by Brendon White who can be found on insta @brendon_white_. Another local insta account that has an amazing whale video is @ingart.islesofscilly BBC News also picked up on the story after some New Year visitors took some great footage of a whale breaching on the north side of St Martin's. And if you missed our video from December 2023 you can watch that on YouTube.
