The new Scillonian IV and Menawethan
Boats are central to island life; even more important are reliable boats. Both of Scilly’s principle ships – the passenger ferry, Scillonian III, and the freight boat, Gry Maritha, have done sterling service but both were showing their age.
In 2019 the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group started the project that will see two purpose built replacement ships. The first of these, the Menawethan, started service in July. Along with lots of other islanders we were invited to the naming ceremony and very much enjoyed our chance to look around her in her shiny new state, getting to see bits of the ship you know will, by now, look much more, 'broken in'!
Much of the impetus to form the Steamship Group in 1920 came from the islands' farmers, who needed a reliable service to ship flowers to the mainland. A service that the Menawethan will continue in her two huge cold stores.
There is a really great history page on the Scilly in the Scilly Steamship Groups' website where you can read all about the boats that have plied the route between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly over the years.
When will the new Scillonian IV come into service?
The passenger boat service to the Isles of Scilly stops every year at the start of November. This Sunday (08/11/26) will mark a significant moment for the Islands as the Scillionian III makes her final journey back to Penzance, after nearly half a century of service.
Many will hold a nostalgic place in their hearts for the traditional feel of the Scillonian III. Boarding her in Penzance, has marked the start of thousands of island adventures but even the most nostalgic will be looking forward to the more comfortable crossing promised by modern ship design.
The Scillonian IV is currently making her way across the oceans from Vietnam and is due to come into service next spring. Bookings to travel on the brand new ship are already open. If a trip to the Isles of Scilly has always intrigued you, now is a great time to start planning.
Or to get yourself a ticket on the new ship you could enter our competition. To celebrate the arrival of Scillonian IV, we’re giving away a pair of return VIP tickets. If a trip to the Isles of Scilly isn't your thing we've got that covered; instead you can choose to enjoy a year of flowers.
HOW TO WIN
VIP boat tickets or a year of flowers
You'll need to visit our competition page and answer this question:
Which flower could be seen on the bow of Scillonian III?
( there's a bit of help on the competition page)
The tickets will include your parking and transfer to the ship in Penzance, a visit to the bridge and tour of the ship, plus vouchers for the café. We’ve also built in a bit of flexibility – if you prefer you can swap your VIP boat tickets for flights from Land’s End or even choose not to travel and enjoy 24 boxes of 40 flowers. Full terms and conditions can be found on our competition page.
